It was provided by the Commonwealth of Virginia, specifically through the Virginia Geographic Information Network Division (VGIN) to support the state's base mapping program. Imagery is displayed in natural color with the following band order: red (band 1); green (band 2); blue (band 3). The dataset's coordinate system is WGS 1984 Web Mercator (Auxiliary Sphere). A cache was built using the ArcGIS Online/Bing Maps/Google Maps tiling scheme containing 11 levels ranging from 1:288,895 to 1:282. Source image tile are in GeoTIFF format with a spatial resolution of 6-inches over the City of Harrisonburg.

The State boundary is buffered by 1000 feet. Coastal areas of the State bordering the Atlantic Ocean or the Chesapeake Bay are buffered by 1000 feet or the extent of man-made features extending from shore. 1-foot resolution digital orthoimagery was developed over the majority of urban/suburban areas of the Commonwealth covering approximately 7,167 square miles and 2-foot resolution digital orthoimagery was developed over the rural areas of the Commonwealth covering approximately 31,923 square miles as defined by VGIN. 6-inch resolution digital orthoimagery was developed in limited urban areas covering approximately 1000 square miles.
